Natural Remedies – Going Back to Nature to Cure Constipation
The natural remedies for getting rid of constipation basically aim at having a healthy colon. They remedial measures are as follows:
- A healthy colon is of utmost importance in maintaining overall good health. Constipation is caused when the colon becomes sluggish. Peristalsis is the muscles contraction in the digestive tract that helps in propelling food via the colon. Hydration is the most effective way by which we can stimulate the bowel contractions. Water provides the binding material for the waste stools. Constipation occurs when there is not enough water for the feces to bind up with. Water helps in the lubrication and proper evacuation of the bowels. Hence we should include at least 8-10 glasses of water in our diet daily.
- A daily intake of 25-30 grams of fiber is essential to keep the colon healthy. Both soluble as well as the insoluble fiber are equally important in the egestion of food. Fiber absorbs water and keeps the colon well hydrated. The watery fiber binds well with the toxic waste. This facilitates the easy elimination of the stools. Besides water retention fiber also adds roughage or bulk to the wastes. This bulk promotes peristalsis by providing it a grip during the muscles contractions.
- A well-lubricated colon is also essential for the smooth passage of stools. Fish oil, flaxseed oil and borage oil can lubricate the colon naturally.
The natural remedies which can be easily done at home for curing constipation and are totally safe are as follows:
- Prunes are a time tested remedy for curing constipation. This is because they act as a mild natural laxative. They can produce some colonic stimulation that is essential in the elimination of the toxic waste. Prune juice can be taken to cure the bowel congestion.
- In some cases cell damage due to free radicals can bring about constipation. Apples contain flavonoids that control the damage done by the free radicals.
- Natural remedies for constipation also include fiber supplements for quick relief. Psyllium husk is effective in curing bowel congestion. A teaspoon of the husk can be added to water. The instructions given on the packaging should be followed. Diabetics should opt for those products that do not have sugar. A high water intake becomes imperative with fiber supplements. This is because fiber needs water to swell up and perform its function. In absence of enough water it will form a lump which will further aggravate the problem.
- There are certain foods that are not conducive for digestion as well as egestion process. Their intake should be restricted in our diet as far as possible. Refined flour hydrogenated oil, fast foods and processed foods fall in this category.
- Drinks such as colas, aerated drinks, caffeinated beverages and alcohol are considered unhealthy. They interact with antacids adversely and can cause constipation.
